William Steele, Board Member of Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center

Buddy Steele has been involved with Westcave since he and his family moved to Austin in 1996. Born and raised in Dallas, Buddy fell in love with the outdoors beginning with crawdad fishing as a young kid in Armstrong Creek a couple of blocks from home and spending thirteen summers at YMCA Camp Grady Spruce on Possum Kingdom Lake. Buddy taught fifth-grade history for a few years after college before entering law school. After clerking for Judge Barefoot Sanders, in 1980 he joined the Dallas law firm of Locke Purnell Boren Laney and Neely, now known as Locke Lord, where he still practices law today in the firm’s Austin office, focusing on commercial litigation. Buddy and his wife Maggie have two grown boys, Hamilton and Baylor. Maggie is an avid gardener, book clubber, and volunteer, including volunteering for Westcave. Buddy also serves on the Board of The Austin Project, a non-profit that aligns community efforts to strengthen families, improve education, and promote early literacy in Austin’s under privileged communities.
