Weekend Public Tours

Every Saturday and Sunday
Visitation to the Preserve’s canyon is only by guided tour to minimize the impact on this fragile site.  The tour takes visitors from an arid savanna through a limestone crevice into a sheltered canyon of lush plant life.  At the head of the canyon stands Westcave, with a 40-foot waterfall replenishing the emerald pool below.
Hours: 10:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Fee:   $5 adult, $2 child or $15 family

Roundtable

The Westcave Roundtable is a group of local landowners and other stakeholders interested in the preservation of the Lower Pedernales River and surrounding area.  The spring Roundtable program includes topics such as: Regional Growth Issues; Dialogue with County & State Officials; and EMS Services.  Check the program calendar at www.westcave.org for more information.  


Star Nights

March 14 and April 4
Take a tour of the night skies at Westcave Preserve, a dark sky location convenient to the Austin area.  Ideal opportunity to enjoy an evening gazing at the stars through a high-quality telescope.  Registration required.
Hours: 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Fee: $5 adult; $2 child


Sunrise Birding Tour

March 21
The Sunrise Birding Tour provides a rare opportunity to view the wide variety of birds at Westcave Preserve during their most active time of day.  Possible sightings include the Golden-cheeked Warbler, Painted Bunting and Rufous-sided Towhee.   Binoculars recommended for best viewing.  Registration required.
Hours:  7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Fee:    $5 adult


Westcave Preserve Open House

March 29
As many of you know, Westcave Preserve added 44 acres to its preserve in the fall of last year. We are planning a day-long nature festival at the Preserve to introduce you, our members and supporters, to the new land. Please mark your calendars and don’t forget to wear good hiking shoes (no open-toed footwear). Bring a sack lunch, water, and plan to spend the day with us! All activities are free of charge.

1 pm – Wildflower Walk with Nan Hampton & Bill Carr New Property Hike with Westcave Preserve Staff

1:30 pm – Children’s Story Time with Barbara Wilson

2 pm – Cave Geology Walk with Chris Caran

Girl Scout Programs: Plantastic!

April 4 and May 2
Earn your Plants Try-It as you discover the wide variety of native Texas plants at Westcave Preserve and enjoy plantastic activities in the Environmental Learning Center. Joint program of Westcave Preserve and Girl Scouts of Central Texas.  To register visit www.GSCTX.org .
Hours:  9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Fee: $8 per girl;  $8 per safetywise adult


Family Owl Prowl

April 18
Bring your family to look and listen for owls as you take a guided evening hike through Westcave Preserve.  A brief presentation on owls before the hike will provide basic information on these amazing animals including their hoots, wails and shrieks.  Registration required.
Hours:  7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
Fee:       $5 adult; $2 child


Project Wild

July 15, 2009
Enjoy a fun and educational day learning hands-on multi-disciplinary activities focusing on wildlife and natural resources.  The curriculum is suitable for grades K-12 as well as youth programs and is TEKS-aligned.  Sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.  Bring a sack lunch. Registration required.
Hours:  9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Fee:  $10

Visitation to the grotto is only by guided tour to minimize the impact on this beautiful and fragile site. Tour rates are $5 per adult, $2 per child (under 12), or $15 per family. Free tour admission is offered for Westcave Preserve members.

Weekday tours for organized groups and schoolchildren can be arranged by calling the preserve at (830)825-3442. Additional information on school groups is available in our Teacher’s Resource Guide, available here on our Web site.

Public tours are offered year-round (weather permitting) on Saturdays and Sundays only at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.
